A Minimi light machine gun-armed operator from the Italian contingent's Carabinieri Tuscania regiment checks the six from out of his armored vehicule's hatch, during a road patrol in Nasiriyah, Iraq.

The Italian Carabinieri are paramilitary police, like the Gendarmerie in France or the Garda Civil in Spain. The Tuscania regiment is an elite airborne Carabinieri unit, from which the GIS (Gruppo di Intervento Speciale) recruits its members. They are deployed in Iraq as part of the Italian contribution to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Starting September the Italians should begin a phased withdrawal, carrying into 2006. Much like the Poles.
